India launches its first Hydrogen-Powered Train, Marking a Green Milestone for Railways

India has entered a new era of sustainable transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen powered train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country’s first hydrogen train from Jind railway station in Haryana on July 17, 2026, making India one of the few nations to adopt hydrogen fuel technology for railway operations. The initiative reflects the government’s growing focus on clean energy, innovation, and environmentally friendly public transport.

A Step Towards Cleaner Rail Transport

Unlike conventional diesel-powered trains, the hydrogen train runs on hydrogen fuel cells which can generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen. This process produces only water vapour and heat as by-products, making it a zero emission mode of transport. This project is launched to support India’s long term sustainability goals and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Route, Schedule and Operations

The train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. During regular service, Train No. 74010 will depart from Jind at 7:40 AM and reach Sonipat at around 9:40 AM. It will complete two round trips every day, covering nearly 356 kilometres daily. Scheduled halts include Pandu Pindara Junction, Lalit Khera, Bhambhewa, and Gohana, improving connectivity for passengers travelling along the route.

Designed for the Future

The train has been built under the ‘Make in India’  initiative and is equipped with two hydrogen-powered driving cars and eight passenger coaches. It can carry approximately 2,600 passengers per day and operates at a maximum speed of 75 km/h. A hydrogen storage is given to operate it safely and efficiently.

Why is this launch important for our nation?

Although Indian Railways has already electrified most of its broad-gauge network, hydrogen-powered trains offer an effective solution for routes where complete electrification is difficult or less practical. Beyond railways, this project shows India’s commitment to develop a broader green hydrogen economy which could help industries such as steel, fertilizers, and clean energy storage in the future.

If we look into the launch of a hydrogen powered train it is more than a technological achievement. It represents the country’s ambition to build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable India.
